Portia Modise is one of Mzansi’s greatest ever footballers and has sadly delivered the most emotional rant we’ve ever seen about women’s football.
PORTIA MODISE HAMMERS SAFA FOR ABUSE
Speaking at a recent event last week, the Soweto-born star said her 15-year career was simply marked by exploitation.
“They used me, singing that national anthem, scoring those goals,” Modise said.
“You know I had 15 years in my career in football, 15. Probably there’s a university that needs to give me a… what’s that called?… “Doctorate,” a voice said in the audience.
“I was very vocal. We need gender equality. We need to be paid the same.
“I’m getting R400 I’m playing for i-national team, I’m getting R 3500 for my game. I don’t even have a signing-on-fee coming to the camp,” Modise added.
“Abo Doc telling me we have R50 000 coming on camp. Where? R50 000 that time I’m living in the shack.
“Scoring those goals. Being the top goal-scorer in Africa, that time I’m living in the shack. No one cares. [From SAFA]
“The only thing they want to see is me coming to that national team. At the end of the day, they abuse me because I don’t even have freedom.
“I am being suppressed. This is me wanting to play football because I have to sacrifice myself because I really wanna play,” Modise, who became the first-ever Banyana Bayana player to score 100 goals added.
