FIFAWWC African Teams Preview: South Africa

Banyana Banyana will be making their second appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup having made their first appearance at the 2019 edition, and this time, as first-time African Champions!

Currently ranked 54th in the world and 2nd in Africa, the WAFCON Champions qualified for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup after defeating Tunisia 1-0 to reach the semi-finals of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, before going on to win the tournament with 2-1 victory over hosts Morocco.

Three-time CAF Coach of the Year, Desiree Ellis will be looking to get past the group stage this time and to do that, she and her team has to battle past Sweden, Italy and Argentina in Group G. In 2019, they only managed to score one goal, by Thembi Kgatlana, as they lost all their group matches.

Kgatlana, who ruptured her Achilles when South Africa lifted the WAFCON title last year, has recovered in time to lead the Banyana Banyana attack in Australia/New Zealand. South Africa will face Sweden in their opening group match on July 23.
