WAFCON Semi-final review

The COSAFA Derby as dubbed by most football fans was indeed a game with lots of talking point including a late penalty which ensured a sixth WAFCON final appearance for South Africa.

Having already qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Head Coach Desiree Ellis says going to the final was one of their objectives in the tournament.

 “ It was our two objectives to qualify for the World Cup and to get to the Final.”

The Copper Queens who also qualified for their first ever World Cup will be going against the Super Falcons for a third place spot on Friday.

For the other semi-final fixture, Morocco qualified for their first ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final after a Penalty shootout win against Nigeria.

Despite being two women down after Halimatu Ayinde and Rasheedat Ajibade were sent off, the Super Falcons were resilient but lost out in the shootout after extra time.
